PHYSICAL CULTURE AND SPORT
Sport in the Kursk region has old and firm tradition. Even before the October Revolution, horseback riding and cycling, athletics, football and Greco-Roman wrestling were well developed in the capital of the province.
The highest achievement in the history of the Kursk sports are: Olympic gold medal of the cyclist Valery Chaplygin (1976), judoka Nicholay Solodukhin in Moscow in 1980, boxer Alexander Povetkin in 2004 (Athens) and fencers Eugenia Lamonova in 2008 (Beijing), a bronze medal of athlete Ekaterina Volkova, and a silver medal offencers Inna Deriglazova (2012, London).
At the end of 2015, the proportion of citizens, who are regularly engaged in physical culture and sports in the total population of Kursk region was 33.5%, the proportion of pupils and students regularly engaged in physical culture and sports in the total number of this category - 78.9%; the level of the providing with sports facilities, on the basis of a one-time capacity of sports facilities, including partially disabled and disabled people increased from 23% in 2008 to 29.4% in 2015.
In 2015, within "Gazprom - to children" program, a fitness center with a swimming pool in Kshensky and 30 multipurpose sports fields were put into operation; a fitness center in the city of Zheleznogorsk was opened in the framework of "Construction of sports and health complexes" social project of All-Russian political party "United Russia".
More than 35 thousand children and adolescents in the region are engaged in 85 institutions of additional education for children of sports orientation, 38 of which are youth sports schools, 6 specialized sports school of Olympic reserve, and the athletic training center "School of High Sports Skills."
The basic Olympic sports in the Kursk region are boxing, judo, athletics, weightlifting, fencing, sports for parapledgia persons (fencing, archery), basketball. 79 kinds of sports are developing in the region.
Every year in the region are carried out around 300 regional physical education and sports activities, including nation-wide mass competition "Ski Russia", "Russian Azimuth", "Orange Ball", "Cross of Nations", which are attended by over 15 thousand people; as well as the national and zonal competitions in judo, fencing, basketball, volleyball, football, weightlifting, motorsports, motorcycling and cycling.

In pursuance of orders of the Russian President on the revival of the RLD complex, a regional plan of actions for the phased introduction of the All-Russian sports complex "Ready for Labor and Defense" (RLD) is underway. In 2015, 8020 people participated in the testing of III and IV stages of Complex,a Regional Testing Center was set up, as well asTesting Centers to implement the types of tests, standards, requirements for assessing of the level of knowledge and skills in the field of physical culture and sports in all municipalities formations of the Kursk region.
Travelling around the Kursk region can become vivid and memorable event for the guests of our region. The region has significant tourism potential, which allows to highlight tourism as one of the priority directions of development of investment activity. In the region, there are many tourist facilities that due to the developed transportation infrastructure are easily accessible for tourists. The main types of tourism are business, religious, eventful and health improving.
Along with natural and ecological, historical and cultural potential is essential for positioning the region on the tourism market, defining its competitive advantages.
Today, in the region, there are more than 4500 monuments of archeology, architecture, history and monumental art, which are testamentsof the different periods of the Kursk region history; 878 regional objects and 114 federal ones are under the state protection.
Religious tourism is one of the main activities of tourist organizations of the region. Thousands of pilgrims come to Kursk to worship Russian shrines and move away from the daily hustle and bustle. The dome of 282 operating temples and 7 monasteries are towering above the Kursk ground. There are preserved places of worship of other religions: Lutheran Church, Catholic Church, Assumption Old Believer Early Christian Church. You can touch the life history of St. Seraphim of Sarov if you visitSergiev-Kazan Cathedral, a masterpiece of the architecture of Rastrelli, and the Resurrection-Ilyinsky temple.
The spiritual center of Russia, Korennaya Pustyn Monastery, was built on the place of finding of the icon of Mother of God "The Omen". Preserved buildings of the XVIII-XIX centuries: The Cathedral of the Nativity of the Mother of God (1860), the Church of the Life-giving source (1711), Kazan church, hotels, exclusionary housing, the Church of Joakim and Anna (1864god) in Dolgoe village, 2 km from the monastery.
Korennaya Pustyn is not only a pilgrimage center, it is also the place, where Kursk Korensk fair has taken place since 1618, one of the biggest in terms of turnover in Russia. Since 2000, the International Fair attracts thousands of participants from all regions of Russia and CIS countries. This is the most anticipated annual event for Kursk residents and guests of the Kursk region. For many pilgrims and tourists Fair is interesting because it combines spiritual and secular traditions of catholicity, unity and development.
The estate of the Russian poet A.A. Fet, Vorobevka village, settled on a steep bank of the river Tuskar, 10 km from Korennaya Pustyn. Since 1986, in this picturesque place on the banks of Tuskar, each summer in early July, lovers of belles-lettres from all over Russia gather for Fet readings.
Every year thousands of tourists visit the open-air town-museum Rylsk - historical town reserve, which is unique because it brought the oldest part of its original appearance over the centuries. It might be called a Wonder town for its identity. There has remained signs of distant antiquity: "The House of Peter I", '' The House of Shemyaka", the Church of the Ascension, St. Basil's Cathedral. Rylsk is a birthplace of the navigator and explorer of Alaska Gregory Shelekhov, Russian discoverer of America.
Tourism infrastructure in the Kursk region consists of the following subjects:
- 85 travel companies (tour operators and travel agents) - including 7 tour operators;
-81 collective accommodation facilities (hotels - 62, recreation centers, motels, campgrounds - 19), the total capacity is more than 5,000 seats;
-9 medical and health institutions;
-22 children's health camps;
-4 exhibition complexes;
-10 objects of rural tourism;
- more than 1,750 food enterprises;
- 1 Tourist Information Center;
- more than 2.5 thousand people are involved in the tourist industry in the region (the stuff of tourist companies, collective accommodation facilities, sanatorium organizations).
The main objectives of the visits to the region are business, religious (pilgrimage), event, health and beauty, historical and cultural tourism.
According to statistics, the largest share in the structure of total inbound tourist flow in the Kursk region is the business tourism (33%), health and beauty (20%). The vast majority of travelers (70.6%) visit the Kursk Region for 1-3 days; 24.7% -for 15 days or more.
There are 34 tourist routes in the region. The most popular among visitors and residents of the region is a tourist-excursion route "Fire heights of the Great Victory" (along the North face of the Kursk Bulge), the length is 185 km. On the route, there are more than 30 tourist objects such as military-historical sites, museums, monuments dedicated to the Battle of Kursk, located on the territory of Ponyrovskiy, Zolotukhinsky, Fatezhsky regions.
The region is actively developing rural tourism. On the territory of municipal districts are 28 hiking trails of historical, cultural, sports and other orientations. Guest reception is carried out in the region by 10 objects of rural tourism providing lodging services and additional services.
By the end of 2015, sightseeing tours of this regionhave been visited by over 29 thousand of Kursk residents and visitors, more than 23 thousand tourists have visited objects of rural tourism.
In the Kursk region, on the basis of "The regional center of tourism" operates atourist-information center and a tourist-information portal of the Kursk region, Gokursk.ru, which allows visitors and residents of the region in the online mode to get reliable information on tourist services in the Kursk region. The number of visitors of the portal is more than 40 thousand people every year.
Organizational work on the construction of mini-hotel chain in the Kursk region is currently underway. Investors are offered lands in Lgovsky, Dmitrievsky, Kurchatovsky, Rylsky, Zheleznogorsky and Sudzhansky districts, in the territory of which are also available non-residential premises.
